A world connected
December 2, 2008 — Craig WeaverIn christening my first blog post here at ivi TV, I wanted to share a story of what it feels like to be a part of a team that creates something new, something that has the ability to change the world. Todd and I co-founded ivi, Inc. nearly two years ago. It was an idea that sprung from Todd’s fertile mind, an idea about how to merge the two most powerful methods of communication the world has ever seen. An idea to re-invent last century’s established technologies as a vital part of this millenium’s new media. Todd had an idea about how to bring broadcast television to the Internet.
Of course, while innovation springs from ideas, putting them into practice is an entirely different challenge. However, by November 4, 2008, ivi TV was fully developed as a working prototype. Our dream was far from realized, but we were at a stage where the theoretical was now practical. I sat down that evening to watch a historic day. I watched as the election returns come in, as the people of the United States were poised to elect their 44th President.
I watched this historic moment on my laptop, on technology powered by ivi.
As I watched Senator John McCain address the nation with his gracious concession speech, I was struck by the themes he chose to relay. He spoke of promise, and greatness, and that nothing is inevitable. Then, as President-Elect Obama took the stage in Chicago, I was moved by his description of a world connected by our own science and imagination. I was inspired, hearing these words, watching them as they were spoken, on a new medium created by a company I helped to build. We at ivi agree that nothing is inevitable; and that with a little science and imagination, we can connect the world.
