Cable news discusses the stimulus package from an angle
January 30, 2009 — Abigail HamiltonThis is not a political post. Just so’s you know.
It’s about TV. As someone who tends to get news from the Internet but still watches TV news โ mostly cable โ I was fascinated by a Think Progress report that cable news outlets across the gamut showed a notable preference for Republican legislators when it came to discussing the stimulus package before congress.
In total, from 6 AM on Monday to 4 PM on Wednesday, the networks have hosted Republican lawmakers 51 times and Democratic lawmakers only 24 times. Fox News came the closest to offering balance, hosting 8 Republicans and 6 Democrats. CNN had only one Democrat compared to 7 Republicans.
It may be that TV folks just haven’t updated their Rolodexes yet, but this report definitely demonstrates why people have been seeking alternative news sources to help them get MORE and more varied news reporting. TV news needs to be better. Or people will take it with a grain of salt, more as entertainment/something to vegetate to rather than news. Dark thought: Maybe that was the plan all along?
