Viewers and Content Owners Win Without DRM
February 2, 2009 — Todd WeaverEveryone who views content wants to watch videos, view shows, see movies, and share their media with their friends. Content owners want to create videos, shows, and movies; and they want to have these creations reach as many viewers as possible. Of course, content owners are also always looking to monetize their investment in the content they have created.
Content owners wonder if it is too much to ask for a delivery method that allows them to freely distribute their available content to every interested viewer, while maintaining control of both the price that is charged and the use of their content?
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is not the answer. DRM is a blanket term for restrictions put on viewers in hopes of controlling access from the content owner. This is why the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has instead derisively labeled DRM “Digital Restrictions Management“.
A delivery medium where both content owners and viewers get what they want has yet to be released. ivi answers that delivery medium issue. By offering an easy-to-use, open-distribution platform where content owners can provide either free or pay-for-view content, both content owners and viewers win. ivi does Internet Television right.
